"Nuclear apocalypse - who do you need? Actors are probably not top of the list. What can I do for you? I can pretend to be somebody who can grow you some nice crops." ~Christian Bale
There's a solar eclipse this weekend!!! Too bad the eastern coast of the United States and most of the rest of the world can't even see it because it will happen after the sun has set! This isn't really relevant to MOST of the world, but still, if you're one of the lucky viewers, don't listen to the advice on that site, look directly at the eclipse the entire time. For those of us that can't see it this weekend, there's a pretty slick slideshow on that site:
(but you gotta scroll past all those words that aren't relevant to anyone except the Rapa Nui on Easter Island)
Speaking of Easter Island, scientists just discovered those weren't just heads buried in the dirt: they had bodies too. Previously, scientists had assumed that the original inhabitants of the island were actually body-less individuals with misshapen heads. Those freaks, the Rapa Nui, may have been the ones that helped predict the end of the world! at the end of this year... or next week:
Some big news this week about Facebook, apparently they're going public and their initial public offering is expected to sell in the GAZILLIONS! Except, it won't, there will be over a billion dollars worth of stock sales and I just can't really wrap my head around that. Basically every number larger than 10 is an abstraction to me so don't listen to my advice about this. It seems, from what I've gathered on the interwebs, that this is "kind of a big deal".
The reason(s) that it's a big deal is/are plentiful and varied. Right now all the scuttle-butt is along the lines of the "if everyone's doing it mentality". So, despite warnings about it from major investing firms, people (on the streets people, apparently) are flocking to this IPO like it's something special and will somehow solve their financial problems. Facebook simply filled a vacuum on the internet that no one knew existed to such an extent at the time that it was created. It's no longer "hip" or "edgy" or "cool" to be on Facebook, it's kind of droll and necessary. Legislation is being discussed all over the country about protecting the sheer volume of data Facebook has amassed. The only real valuable selling point for a "web-enterprise" like the social giant is the fact that they have tons of data to cull and sell to the highest bidder.
Which is exactly what they'll do when it turns out that suddenly this "corporation" has a new master, the shareholder, and the new master will be demanding some compensation for this inflated sense of self-worth by a social media giant that's not even that old. 1 in 7 have an account on Facebook, how long until those 1 in 7 are sold out for corporate greed? Probably like a week. Join G+, everyone but CEO Zuckerberg has more or less doubled their initial sell off, it's just some rats fleeing a sinking ship.
I wouldn't buy it even if i could afford it, G+ is way better for me personally and I can't wait until everyone else gets on board with this thing so that I won't be the only loser amongst my friends "still giving it a whirl". Hopefully, I'll be the avant garde independent one that stuck with the ultimate winner in a battle of "who do you know?" versus "who do YOU know?".
