“To be understood is to prostitute oneself” ~Fernando Pessoa
Twitter tells me today that "16 and Pregnant" is a trending topic this week. I'm a very curious individual and I'll admit that the premise to this show insults my intelligence as well as any viewer. I was extremely cautious about beginning this post and still have my doubts. MTV is notorious for that type of drivel but it seems to be mostly palatable to the masses. MTV proceeds and continues in their manner of trashy classlessness and America eats it up like it's their first meal in weeks and they'd been held hostage and forced to watch educational television programming. They do not, however, show much music on their music television station, much to the delight of cliche comedians around the world.
Since this show is trending in the twitterverse and I'm basically a whore for attention for this site, I decided against my better judgment to delve deep into the world of this "reality" show. After a great deal of sifting through promotional nonsense about the actual show itself, I found my way over to their wikipedia entry which was much more enlightening and organized, even more so than the IMDB entry. The entry on the IMDB was garbage, it had no summaries or synopses or notable quotables or anything like that. The matter of fact approach used on the wikipedia page amused me to no end though:
In episode 2, Farrah, is threatened by her boyfriend, Abraham, through text messages and she decides to not inform him he's the baby daddy. I imagine the text went something like this: "B!TCH, YOOS BETTA NOT B PREG OR I KILL YA". In addition, Farrah's mother, Sophia, was less than supportive throughout the entire ordeal, but it was all happily ever after for everyone involved because Abraham died in a car crash shortly before the child was born. End Result for Farrah: No child support from the baby daddy and constant fights with her mother because she's a whore and got pregnant at 16.
In the third episode of season one, the pregnant youth is named Amber and there's not much drama until she gets the classiest proposal of all time: her baby daddy, Gary, gets down on one knee and proposes with a wedding ring bought at Wal-Mart. Over the next few episodes in season one some of the issues include: endangering the welfare of a child, shoplifting home pregnancy tests, and only one adoption. That was the only sensible thing any of these kids did through the entire first season.
The first baby daddy in season two gets arrested followed by a habitual cheater in episode two. Later in the season one of the baby daddies, while out working on his car, decides to text the baby momma to inform her he's not interested in caring for the child or loafing around much longer with the child's mother.
Season two starts to get into some feel-good teen pregnancy stories about overcoming adversity in spite of the odds so I stopped reading the summaries at about that point. In conclusion, the first two seasons of "16 and Pregnant" might be worth a watch, if you're into seeing teenage sluts and whores act like teenage sluts and whores and young (or older) men acting like children. IMDB gives this 3.5 stars out of 10, they're more generous than I and I've never even watched the show.
